Vintage 1978 – 1981 Fender Jazz Bass Natural Maple – All Original
1978 – 1981 Fender Jazz Bass Natural Maple
Up for sale, this is a stunning vintage late ’70s Fender Jazz Bass in Natural finish with Maple neck, ALL ORIGINAL.
As usual these Fender years, S8xxxxx Serial Number, 3 bolt neck F plate with bullet truss rod. Pots dated ’80, grey bottom pickups dated ’78 and sticker assembling date 04 – 15- 81, which means Fender had several necks with bodies paired that were assembled years later. Very common to find these instruments with S7, S8 and S9 serial numbers that were actually assembled even 2 or 3 years later, however still a truly late ’70s Jazz Bass with all the features such as bound neck with block inlays, Ash body with wider pickup spacing and 3 bolt neck joint. All parts appears to be original except from the hard case, which is a Victoria (same manufacturer that made all Fender hard cases) Black Tolex case similar era.

Weighting at 10.8 lbs, which is average for an Ash body instrument form these years, however it’s pretty well balanced. The Natural Glossy Polyr finish combined with the original 3-ply black pickguard and a Maple neck with White binding and pearl block inlays creates a stunning combination. This is an amazing example of a ’70s Jazz Bass, which is well known for its Characteristic punch, attack and bright sound. Lots of checking and patina, however the bass is in Very good condition for its age, it’s been played or used with the utmost care.
The neck is incredible, a massive all Maple neck with a great flame and the typical skunk stripe. It has the typical checking and wear in the back throughout years of playing which makes it very smooth to play. It’s a medium (not too chunky) neck profile (0.820″ Neck thickness at 1st fret and .940″ at 12th fret). Nut width is 1.5″. Frets appears to be original as they show moderate wear, allowing low action and playing throughout the whole fretboard evenly without any dead spots. The Neck is perfectly straight, with truss rod functioning both ways. It’s been professionally set and strung with a round wound set of D’addario Nickel. The bass really plays amazingly well.
The instrument comes with its original thumbrest and its original ashtray and pickup covers, plus a Victoria black tolex hard case (which is in good condition, with some noticeable wear and a replaced handle, although with all latches working and fully functional).
